In this paper, we investigate how students who are concurrently enrolled in both introductory chemistry and biology courses at the university level perceive the integration of energy within each discipline and across the two disciplines, and how they attempt to accommodate and reconcile different disciplinary approaches to energy, for the purpose of informing future, interdisciplinary course reform. To facilitate the meaningful learning of energy concepts and the transfer of such learning across disciplinary boundaries, students need to be given scaffolded opportunities to recognize the similarities and reconcile the differences between how we talk about energy in different disciplines and contexts. kinetic) may mask the similarities that underlie these disciplinary approaches and hinder students’ ability to transfer their understanding between courses. solutions chemistry), and perspective (e.g., thermodynamic vs. molecular), disciplinary system (e.g., organismal vs. Variations in scale (e.g., macroscopic vs. However, the ways in which energy is approached in introductory biology and chemistry courses may seem (at best) superficially similar to students. No matter the disciplinary context, the underlying energy concepts should be the same. Likewise, all biological systems rely on large inputs of energy to maintain order and function, and students are taught to trace this energy through ecosystems and the mechanisms by which it is captured, processed, and stored in organisms. In chemistry, all processes are associated with changes in energy, from the macroscopic observations in a lab to the molecular-level interactions that underpin them. This is particularly problematic, because understanding energy is vital to developing a robust understanding of concepts both within and across science disciplines. But from an early age, students hear the word “energy” used in colloquial language, and the intuitive ideas they develop are not always productive for constructing a meaningful and useful scientific framework ( Watts, 1983 Goldring and Osborne, 1994 Barak et al., 1997 Papadouris et al., 2008 Chen et al., 2014 Nordine, 2015). As Richard Feynman famously wrote, “It is important to realize that in physics today, we have no knowledge what energy is” ( Feynman et al., 1977, 4.1 What is energy? section, para. However, energy is an elusive concept not easily defined by experts, let alone students. In the Framework for K–12 Science Education: Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas (referred to as the Framework in this paper), it is referred to as both a disciplinary core idea in the physical and life sciences and a crosscutting concept ( National Research Council, 2012). We recommend that instructors engage in interdisciplinary conversations and consider the perspectives and goals of other disciplines when teaching introductory science courses.Įnergy has long been identified as central to a robust understanding of science. These findings reveal a disconnect between how energy is understood and used in introductory science course work and uncovers opportunities to make stronger connections across the disciplines. Differences were also apparent in students’ descriptions of the molecular-level mechanisms by which energy transfer occurs. Findings suggest that, while students believed energy to be important to the scientific world and to the disciplines of biology and chemistry, the extent to which it was seen as central to success in their courses varied. In this study, university students concurrently enrolled in introductory chemistry and biology were interviewed to explore their perceptions of the integration of energy both within and across the disciplines, and how they attempted to accommodate and reconcile different disciplinary approaches to energy, to inform future, interdisciplinary course reform. Energy is a concept that underlies all scientific phenomena and, as such, provides an appropriate context in which to investigate student connections and misconnections across disciplines. \): Scheme of Spectral Overlap.Despite the number of university students who take courses in multiple science disciplines, little is known about how they connect concepts between disciplines.

After thanking his crew for their courage and help, Alec instructs them to row toward the ship. As the ship steams toward them, every survivor literally turns his back on Alec, except for Edith, who insists that he made the right decision. After the others pull him back into the boat, a ship's horn is heard in the distance and they fire a flare to signal the vessel. Believing that he is dying, Alec passes his command and ring to Clary, then jettisons himself overboard. Although the others thank Alec for saving their lives, Jill warns that he will live in shame for his actions. When the storm finally wanes, the survivors are amazed that they are still alive. As the storm hits with gale force winds, Alec rallies the survivors to keep rowing. Before dying, Faroni hurls his knife into Alec's shoulder. Alec's revolver is out of bullets, so he seizes a flare gun and shoots Faroni. As Edith recites the roll call of death, Faroni pulls out a knife and orders Alec to turn back and save the others. Julie watches in horror and disbelief as Alec pronounces the death sentences, one by one. Dorothy Knudsen meets her death with dignity when she is commanded to go overboard. After Alec orders Aubrey into the water, his dog leaps in after him. When George insist that their young son Peter join them, Michael Faroni, one of the passengers, promises to take care of the boy, who then watches as his parents are cast away to certain death. Kilgore and her husband George into the water. Shocked by Alec's heartlessness, McKinley goes overboard with her. When the winds begin to rage, Alec startles the survivors by announcing that the weak must go and orders McKinley, his second-in-command, to toss Mrs. After declaring that Alec must put twelve people over the side, Kelly leaps to his death. As a storm approaches, Kelly stands up and proclaims that he is dead, as are Mrs. Kilgore begs for a drink of water, the dying Kelly warns Alec that unless he disposes of the "useless" passengers, all will die. Sarcastically addressing Alec as "brave captain", socialite Edith Middleton insists on taking her own turn in the sea. To alleviate the overload, Alec orders the men to take shifts floating in the water beside the boat. With no other alternatives, Alec calculates that the closest land is in Africa, 1,500 miles away. Alec's hopes that a nearby cruiser is steaming to their rescue are dashed when he learns that "Sparks" Clary, the ship's radio operator, was unable to send out a distress signal because the ship's transmitter had been smashed in the explosion. With only one gallon of water aboard, Alec allows the survivors only two sips a day and warns that anyone countermanding his orders will be thrown overboard. Ruth Spencer has a battered arm that will have to be amputated. Kilgore, the mother of little Peter, is suffering from broken ribs, and Mrs. When Alec asks Jill to examine the passengers for injuries, she reports that Frank Kelly, the ship's engineer, has been riddled with parts from the engine explosion. Alec then declares that the dog will stay aboard to serve as food if necessary. Barrington demands that the dog be sacrificed, Alec brandishes his revolver and threatens to charge the major with mutiny if he refuses to follow orders. Alec's first crisis of command arises when Aubrey Clark, one of the passengers, begs to keep his beloved dog aboard. Once Alec reaches the boat, the ship's fatally injured captain, Paul Darrow, passes his command and his cherished ring to Alec, admonishing him to "save as many as he can." After Darrow dies, Alec dons the captain's jacket, then orders his body cast over the side. The boat, built to hold nine passengers, soon is overburdened by the twenty-seven survivors that have sought refuge there. From a lifeboat in the distance, Will McKinley, one of the ship's officers, beckons to Alec and Julie to join them. When Alec sees ship's nurse Julie White, with whom he is in love, foundering in the water, he swims out to save her. Among them is Executive Officer Alec Holmes, who clings to the flotsam of the ruined vessel. Of the ship's 1,156 passengers, only twenty- seven survive. In response, the railway company has offered its sympathy and said it is working to resolve problems at intersections in Leggett and other communities. In Texas, K’Twon’s mother has filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific, claiming its routine blockage of the Glover Road intersection prevented paramedics from reaching her child, thereby causing his death. But while Congress has shown some renewed concern about rail safety, there has been little focus on an everyday safety threat - long trains blocking first responders from getting to emergencies. Much of the nation’s focus has been on a long Norfolk Southern train that derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, in February, sparking a toxic fireball and prompting state and federal investigations. As they do, they are blocking rural and urban intersections, stoking anger and contributing to tragedies and calamities. Over the past decade, rail corporations have been running more lengthy freight trains - some as long as three miles - partly to save fuel and labor costs. This blocks road crossings and can, in some spots, leave residents with no way in or out. residents say trains stop and wait for long periods, often for locomotive crew changes. In other words, any difficulties in regulating our thoughts, emotions, and actions – as is common with ADHD – may explain the irritability, tantrums, and anger regulation issues these individuals experience. However, these associated disorders do not explain the near universal anger and emotional issues that ADHD individuals experience.Ī critical aspect to consider, then, is ADHD’s nature as a disorder of self-regulation across behavior, attention, and emotion. Decades ago, when ADHD was known as “minimal brain dysfunction,” criteria for diagnosis actually included aspects of negative emotionality.Īnger problems and emotional dysregulation in individuals with ADHD are sometimes explained by co-occurring mood disorders, such as anxiety or depression. Though separated from ADHD in official nomenclature today, emotional dysregulation and anger were connected to ADHD in the mid-20th century before current diagnostic norms were created, and have continued to form part of personal and clinical experiences. Anger Issues and ADHD: Theories & Research In all, paying mind to anger issues and emotionality in patients with ADHD is crucial for successful treatment and symptom management in the long term. Recognizing this inherent relationship between emotional dysregulation and ADHD is also important when discerning between related and similar conditions, like disruptive mood dysregulation disorder ( DMDD), bipolar disorder, intermittent explosive disorder ( IED), depression, anxiety disorders, and oppositional defiant disorder ( ODD). Scientific and clinical attention are now increasingly turning to correct the past neglect of this integral aspect of ADHD. Ultimately, emotional dysregulation is one major reason that ADHD is subjectively difficult to manage, and why it also poses such a high risk for other problems like depression, anxiety, or negative self-medication. Recent findings, however, suggest that problems with emotional regulation, including anger and negative emotions, are genetically linked to ADHD, too. These problems walk in lock step with the general difficulties in self-regulation that characterize ADHD. Even when controlling for related comorbid conditions, individuals with ADHD experience disproportionate problems with anger, irritability, and managing other emotions. Anger issues stemming from emotional dysregulation – while noticeably missing from diagnostic criteria for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or ADD) – are a fundamental part of the ADHD experience for a significant number of children and adults. 1/19/2024 0 Comments Corona virus symptoms vs coldSARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV viral load dynamics, duration of viral shedding, and infectiousness: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
